$160m Christchurch development planned

A $160 million complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, international golf training academy and a high-end subdivision is planned for Christchurch.

Whisper Creek, planned for suburban Spencerville, is expected to create 120 part-time and full-time jobs and generate an estimated $68 million annually.

It was hoped the academy would attract up to 160 young golfing professionals each year, its developer businessman Thomas Na said.

He said it had been in the pipeline for 12 years and cost $17 million to get off the ground.

Former professional golfer Sir Nick Faldo, who designed the golf course, said it was a fantastic project to be involved in.

"New Zealand is a country that loves sport, and I'm looking forward to adding my own contribution to the country's sporting culture. It's going to be a privilege to play a role in Christchurch's regeneration,'' he said.

Work is expected to begin early next year with the golf course to open in 2015.

Sections have a starting price of around $700,000 and it was hoped construction would begin in autumn 2015.

The development will include:

* 131 high-end residential sections ranging in size from 1000 square metres to 2250 square metres
* an 18 hole international golf course
* international golf training academy attracting young golfers from Europe and Asia
* 113 resort apartments;
* 41 hectares of ecological parkland including a public walkway, wetlands and a horse/cycling track
* a members-only sports complex containing a 25m indoor heated swimming pool, spa and sauna.
