Title hopes gone but Caversham can still make presence felt in league

The title may be out of reach, but Caversham can still play a part in where it goes.

It hosts Cashmere Technical at Hancock Park today at 2.45pm in the final round of the Southern Football League.

A win will take Cashmere two points ahead of Nelson Suburbs which plays third-placed Coastal Spirit in Christchurch tomorrow.

It is a tight title race and, with Caversham in fourth spot, leaves two top match-ups to decide it.

Caversham cannot slip out of the top four.

On 12 points, it is well clear of the chasers and it could yet go past Coastal which is on 12.

Beating Cashmere will be a big task.

The defending champion is coming off a 5-1 win over Coastal and dropped its only points in a 1-0 loss to Nelson.

However, Caversham has found form itself.

It claimed a 3-2 win over Nomads United in its last game and was denied by an added time goal in a 1-1 draw with Nelson.

It was the first points Nelson had dropped in the league, although it hit back with a 5-1 win over Otago University.

The goals conceded in each of those games - along with one against Mosgiel - are the only three Nelson has had scored against it.

That is an impressive record to hold its four Mainland opponents scoreless.

University faces Western as it looks to salvage some points from its final game.

After a strong run of performances in the Football South Premier League, it has had a tough time at the South Island level. It has leaked 30 goals in six games and is yet to come up with a point.

That leaves Western a strong chance to pass Mosgiel and Nomads United in fifth. Both are one point ahead but played their final game last week.
