Southern youth away to Auckland first up

Southern United will open its national youth league campaign with a trip to Auckland.

The side will head north to face Eastern Suburbs in its first match of the season on October 13.

After having Labour Weekend off, it will then host defending champion Auckland City in its first home game at Tahuna Park on October 27.

The team will also host Team Wellington, Tasman United and Canterbury United at Tahuna Park.

A 10-team competition, the youth league mirrors one round of the senior national premiership and acts as a stepping stone into that competition.

Players born from 1999 to 2002 are eligible.

The Southern side will be head coached by Terry Boylan this year. Harley Rodeka and Cam McPhail will be assistant coaches.

Boylan will continue as assistant coach of the club's senior side, while also being involved with the 16s group at the Southern United academy.

The new set-up will allow the youth team to train regularly with the senior side, with the goal of advancing more locally produced players to the top team.

The league consists of a full round robin, the winner being the team at the top of the table at the end.

It concludes on December 16.
