'Massive event': demand for World Cup tickets

Tickets for next year's Fifa women's World Cup are getting snapped up and the tournament's mascot has had its first public appearance in Dunedin.

Tournament chief executive Dave Beeche said today the stage was set for the world's largest women's sports event, to be hosted by New Zealand and Australia.

Tickets for individual football fixtures went on sale from today after venue packs had previously been available, and Mr Beeche said demand was strong.

The most interest was from the United Kingdom,  the United States and China so far.

Mr Beeche said New Zealanders, too, were grasping how big the tournament would be.

"This will be a massive event for New Zealand, like it's not seen before," he said.

Mascot Tazuni made an appearance at a kickaround with Southern United football players at Logan Park in Dunedin this morning.

The name of the penguin combines Tasman with unity.

Dunedin is to host six matches including New Zealand against Switzerland.
