Football: Serious stuff, claiming a goal

Striker Aaron Burgess' six-goal haul last week raised a few eyebrows, and also generated a few inquiries about the system used by Footballsouth to record statistics for the golden boot competition.

Dunedin Technical's Burgess leads all scorers with nine goals, followed by Caversham's Darren Overton on six, a situation likely to change when the sides meet today at Tonga Park.

For Burgess, it is business as usual, since he has scored 71 league goals in the previous three years to lead goalscoring charts.

Scorers are usually easily identified, but occasionally when the ball is deflected into goal, there are varied opinions on whether it was an own goal or should be credited to a striker.

Normally, if the ball was on course for goal anyway, it is credited to the player who hit it, and only if the deflection radically changed the flight of the ball is it an own goal.

Footballsouth general manager Bill Chisholm points out the matter should always be settled when team sheets are finalised after the match.

"The match referee keeps a written record of scorers.

This is confirmed by his assistants' record, and after the match, both coaches have to sign the teamsheet to confirm accuracy," Chisholm said.

"As long as everyone does their job accurately, there should be no problems."

Having an in-form striker such as Burgess in his ranks is a boost for Technical coach Mike Fridge, but he is quick to point out that Tristan Prattley and Tim McLennan are also among the top FPL scorers, with three goals each.

Technical, like Caversham, is in rebuilding mode, and it is during that situation that coaches earn their corn.

Fridge lost nine of last year's squad, and while the team has conceded more goals than in the past, the coach is pleased with progress.

Caversham's new coaching duo of Richard Murray and Andy Duncan has also had to re-tune the Caversham machine that swept all before it in the last decade, but is now two points below Technical.

Core players such as Overton, Tom Schwarz, Jeremy Wild, Ant Hancock and Harley Rodeka remain, but Caversham supporters will still need team sheets to recognise many new players this season.

Fringe players to impress so far are Hamish Chan, Anton Ross and new keeper Callum Flaws, while defender Mike Smith, soldiering on for another season, is still a steady performer.

All FPL matches are at 2.45pm. Mosgiel (fourth) hosts University (fifth) at Memorial Park, Grants Braes (eighth) is at home to Roslyn-Wakari (third), Green Island (10th) plays Northern (seventh) at Sunnyvale, and the Spirit (ninth) plays Queenstown (sixth) in Invercargill.
