Dunedin Technical continues its compressed finish to the season with two simultaneous games today.
After drawing 1-1 with Roslyn-Wakari at Carisbrook on Wednesday, Technical is now husbanding its resources with a view to fielding a fit squad for next week's Chatham Cup final.
So today the senior Technical squad will travel to Queenstown for the last of the Soccersouth Premier League matches, while its young reserve side will take on Caversham in the Knock Out Cup a day earlier than the scheduled fixture, and at the changed venue of Tonga park at 2.45pm.
Technical beat Queenstown 9-1 at Tahuna in May, but Central Otago coach Jamie Whitmarsh has radically improved his side, and while it remains the underdog, it does have an important home advantage.
The Knock-Out Cup, which will run for three weeks, is hardly a high profile trophy and it will be interesting to see how Technical's youngsters fare against the equally young Caversham side.
But Caversham is unlikely to take its foot off the pedal as it chases yet another trophy, and coach Steve Fleming is sure to field his strongest side.
Three matches in five days may seem excessive for Technical which will compete in the Chatham Cup final on September 13 in Auckland.
Time will tell.
Other KO Cup matches feature University against Roslyn-Wakari at the Caledonian ground on Saturday, and at the same 2.45 kick off time, Northern will play an Otago Youth side at the Gardens.
On Sunday, Mosgiel plays Grants Braes at 2.45 pm at Memorial park.
