Football: Roslyn edges Tech in cup tie

The two top women's sides in Footballsouth battled out an exciting national knockout cup tie at Tahuna Park yesterday.

Roslyn-Wakari edged Dunedin Technical 3-2 to reach the last 16 of the top women's competition.

A fierce wind blowing the length of the pitch made big demands of skill and stamina, but the large crowd of spectators were warmed in the wintry conditions as play ebbed back and forth.

Roslyn struck first when a well-hit long shot by Chelsea Martin deceived keeper Tessa Nicol, but Technical struck back minutes later when another Chelsea - Whittaker this time - hit a shot from the left wing that dipped inside the Roslyn near post.

A languid left-footer by Una Madden gave Roslyn a 2-1 lead at the break but, early in the second half, Whittaker scored again to tie the scores.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Alice Foote hit a stunning winner almost immediately, for Roslyn to win the tie.

Technical coaches Graham Smail and Andy Whittaker praised their side's skill and resilience in bouncing back twice and, apart from Chelsea Whittaker, who was Technical's player of the day, they singled out Shontelle Smith, Kate Bloxham and striker Kerry Morrow.

Kushla Glover governed central midfield for Roslyn, and Sam Muirhead, Kaitlin Fitchett and Jordyn Walker were also impressive.

Roslyn coach Nick Rzepecky is delighted his side has progressed in the cup after a non-existent pre-season.

"Our preparation was minimal, but recent wins over Green Island, 3-0, and Northern, 6-0, suggest we are coming right.

We hope to do well and can't wait for the open draw for the final 16 teams."
