Football: Otago drawn against Real Sociedad, Alset, Armagh

The Otago youth team was given exceptional opponents when the draw for the group stages of the Milk Cup was made this week.

Otago's group includes Real Sociedad, the Basque team from San Sebastian in Spain whose senior side is managed by David Moyes, himself a Milk Cup player as a youth with Everton.

Also in the group is Colombian team Alset and the Armagh, the Irish county side.

Academy director Neil Mackenzie thought his cup was full when pre-tournament games against Manchester City and Burnley youth sides were confirmed, and now it is positively overflowing with the Milk Cup draw.

''To play against top youth sides from Spain and Colombia is a privilege, and the draw will spur our lads onwards as they enter the final stages of their preparation,'' Mackenzie said.

''Apart from being top young professionals with super skills, it is the totally different styles of play that these teams introduce. The mindset in Spain and Colombia will be totally different from games that our squad has already played against.''

Other teams at the exotic tournament include French side Vendee, a finalist last year, Chile's O'Higgins FC, Mexico's Club America, Japan's Higashi Fukuoka, Scotland's Partick Thistle, Spain's Malaga CF, Zambia's Lusaka Academy, CSKA Moscow, Newcastle United, American side Orange County Blues and Irish club Cherry Orchard.

Last year, the Otago side played CSK Moscow, Australian Gold Coast Academy, top Dublin side Bohemians, and County Tyrone.

In the playoff for the Milk Cup Plate against County Fermanagh, a late penalty cost Otago the trophy.

''Our preparation this year has been helped by Football South's policy decision to try and organise games against premier sides on Sundays,'' Mackenzie said.

''It is now a given that many New Zealand representative sides play against older and more experienced teams to harden up for top tournaments."

The Milk Cup squad leaves Dunedin on July 18.

On the domestic front, the focus will be on the Chatham Cup tie at Memorial Park between Mosgiel and University today.

It will test Varsity coach Darren Hart's ability to recruit players, since many are absent on holiday.

Mosgiel has no such problem and is aiming at a cup run and, hopefully, a chance to play against teams other than the usual Football South Premier League mixture.

Dunedin Technical has similar ambitions as it travels to Timaru to play Northern Hearts in the cup - present form favours coach Aaron Burgess' side.

Hearts suffers from the isolation of only playing locally in Timaru, similar to the scene in Invercargill, where fans get nostalgic regarding times when teams from Christchurch and beyond used to play their teams.

One thorn that may prick Technical is the presence in Hearts' attack of Ant Hancock, a former national league player who is capable of snatching goals from nowhere, and could change the balance of the tie.

In the league, Roslyn-Wakari might suffer some trepidation in facing Caversham at Tonga Park.

Caversham was unexpectedly knocked out of the Chatham Cup by Varsity, but is flying in the league after scoring a record 15 goals against Northern last week.

Roslyn held a good Mosgiel side to a 0-0 draw last week, and ever-optimistic coach Colin Thom will seek a similarly gritty performance this week.

Women's league games tomorrow feature the Dunedin Technical Swans v Northern at Culling Park, Roslyn-Wakari reserves v Green Island Green at Ellis Park, Roslyn-Wakari White v Balclutha Red at Ellis Park No 4, Mosgiel v Roslyn-Wakari Black at Memorial Park, and Green Island Yellow v Caversham at Sunnyvale.
