Football: Default by Spirit 'disappointing'

Soccersouth acting general manager Wilson James was unimpressed Invercargill-based side Spirit FC had to default its premier league match with Roslyn Wakari at the weekend.

Wilson told the Otago Daily Times Spirit notified Soccersouth during the week it was struggling with injuries and illness, and it made the decision to pulled out of the fixture on Friday afternoon.

"They have struggled during the last year or two to field a team in the second part of the season, but this is the first time that I'm aware they have actually defaulted," Wilson said.

"It was disappointing for sure, and not what we want in the premier competition."

Wilson said he would need to talk to his colleagues before making a decision on whether the club would be fined.

"There is the ability within the regulations to fine a club for defaulting a game . . . but we take each case on its merit."

Roslyn Wakari was awarded a 2-0 win.

Meanwhile, Caversham remains at the top of the premier league after an impressive 5-2 win over Dunedin Technical.

The result was a small consolation for losing to Dunedin Technical in a Chatham Cup knockout match last month.

In other matches, Queenstown beat Northern 4-1 and Mosgiel dispatched bottom-of-the-table Grants Braes 5-0.
