Caversham rocked Dunedin Technical with an explosive burst, scoring three goals in seven minutes during the second half of the match played at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday.

The 3-1 win moves Caversham one point ahead of Technical with five Footballsouth Premier League matches left to play.

Caversham also has a better goal difference.

It was a highly competitive game, illuminated by a second-half Caversham goal of the highest order.

Fullback Craig Ferguson left Technical players trailing in his wake when he made an aggressive run up the left wing. As Technical players dived in, the little Scot hurdled his way to the bye line.

While most expected a left wing cross, Ferguson then cut in along the line towards goal, again evading attempted tackles, before drilling a low cross towards goal.

Striker Tom Jackson raced in, attracting defenders like a magnet, but instead of going for the predictable shot, he dummied over the ball, and left Harley Rodeka the simplest of close range tap-ins.

In the massed celebrations, Caversham's delighted high-fives and laughter contrasted with Technical's dejected defenders.

Yet for most of the match, it was a counter-punching series of attacks by both sides, and it was big Technical striker Brad Rodden who threaded a low shot past keeper Callum Flaws in the 27th minute.

Technical then had its best period, with Alistair Rickerby shunting forward, Michael Flaws and Victor da Costa zipping around, and Aaron Burgess involved but not looking as menacing as usual.

In the second half, Caversham coach Richard Murray restored Jackson to his natural striking role, with Rodeka rampant and Ant Hancock weaving and interchanging.

Will Smith, playing possibly his best match this season, showed it all: tough tackling, composure, and accurate distribution.

An injury forced Technical defender Liam Lockhart off, and possibly taking advantage, Ferguson set up that classy goal by Rodeka, then centreback Jude Fitzpatrick showed copybook technique to volley Caversham into a 2-1 lead.

Jack-in-the-box Hancock then cut in from the right, and teased a Technical tackle that had Christchurch referee Mike Lindsay pointing to the penalty spot.

Keeper Walker dived the right way, but Rodeka's penalty was too well hit, and the score was 3-1, with Caversham buzzing and Technical shell-shocked.

"We dominated the first half but did not put our chances away.

"There is still a lot of football to be played, and we will be there at the end," Technical coach Mike Fridge said.

Caversham coach Murray thought his side controlled most of the game.

"Jackson and Rodeka's energy and pace pressured mistakes, and that second goal set up by Fergie, dummied by Jacko and rammed in by Harley, should be on You Tube," Murray said.

In other matches, Green Island's 2-1 win over Mosgiel moves Malcolm Fleming's side into third position, replacing Roslyn-Wakari, which lost 2-1 to a battling Northern side.

At Ocean Grove, Grants Braes drew 1-1 with University.
