The Footballsouth Premier League kicks off today, with Caversham and Dunedin Technical looking championship contenders before a ball is kicked.

Caversham has monopolised the league, which includes teams from Invercargill and Queenstown, to such an extent that shirts were printed last year celebrating a decade of success.

There is every chance that the same printing machines are poised to go into action again this year.

Caversham and Technical stretched out to a 10-point lead ahead of Roslyn-Wakari and Mosgiel by the end of last season, then entered a South Island championship play-off.

Both Dunedin sides beat their Canterbury opposition.

Caversham beat Western 3-2, and in Christchurch, Technical eventually beat Woolston on penalties after drawing 3-3.

Technical then went on to beat Caversham 4-1 in the final, and both sides celebrated.

Mike Fridge's Technical side enjoyed its convincing win, while Caversham rated the long haul of a 16-game premier league as the true championship.

This year, Caversham coach Steve Fleming has kept a lid on his side's progress by not entering the pre-season tournament, so it will go in untested in its first league game against University at Tahuna Park.

University is always an unknown quantity with its volatile mix of student talent.

This season there are even more variables, since the takeover of coaches Terry Parle and Brazilian Luiz Uehara.

Varsity had several runs in the pre-season, and has pace and considerable energy, which will keep Caversham honest.

Dunedin Technical's first match is away to the Southern Spirit in Invercargill, a fixture which has often produced tripwires for the unwary.

The Spirit has Scots midfielder Barry Gardener in charge and, apart from a fresh young squad, there is a strong likelihood Gardener will sign an import from overseas to strengthen his squad.

Third last year, Roslyn-Wakari also has a pair of new coaches in James Vaughan and Andy Duncan, who will be looking to start well against Grants Braes.

That match has been transferred to the Caledonian Ground with a revised 12.30pm kick-off before the match between Northern and Green Island.

Northern coaches David Martin-Chambers and John Wilkinson have a good blend of players this year, who have already shown an impressive ability to score goals.

Workaholic Green Island coach Malcolm Fleming had a small rest after his debut season with Otago United in the New Zealand Football Championship but is back on deck, working hard to maximise the potential of his Island side.

More fixture changes have given Mosgiel home advantage at Memorial Park for its season-opener against Queenstown's unpredictable side coached by Englishman Jamie Whitmarsh.
