Otago refereeing numbers peaked at 60 officials in the late 1970s, but have plummeted with only seven officials now qualified to control Southern Premier League matches.
Boyd has hopes that several recently retired referees may be convinced to return to the game.
The original changeover which occurred when the feder-ation system was implemented seemed to cause some disen-chantment, he said.
Boyd has been refereeing since 1987, and still is involved in matches as well as being an integral life member of the Otago Referees Association , in which he has served as president, secretary, treasurer, publicity officer, coach, trainer and assessor.
