Officials recently looked at four venues the Dunedin City Council put forward for consideration, and the council will soon be told which grounds have made a shortlist and what further work needs to be done.
Council parks and recreation group manager Scott MacLean said he travelled to Mosgiel with an official who seemed to be impressed with the short travel time from Dunedin’s city centre and the quality of most pitches he assessed.
They also visited a couple of extra options, MacLean said.
One Fifa requirement is the training venues must be fully fenced and screened from the public.
MacLean said the likely cost of such work had been built into Dunedin’s bid to help host the World Cup.
Venues had to be accessible by bus.
Matches would be held at the city’s covered stadium.
Dunedin is one of four cities in New Zealand that will host the tournament, along with five cities in Australia.
