The gulf in class was evident as the goals poured in at Logan Park.

Nine times Coastal Spirit found the back of Otago University's net - and it was probably fortunate that number was not higher.

The Coastal attack was dynamic, although at times the University defence more resembled a sieve than a wall.

Whatever way you paint it, the 9-1 win takes Coastal within a point of the Southern Football League's top spot.

University languishes a distant last, having conceded 15 goals in its last two games.

Former Dunedin player Michael Hogan had four of yesterday's goals on his return to the city.

The Coastal midfielder and captain provided clinical finishing, although it was the product of a dominant team effort.

University struggled to cope with the Coastal defensive pressure, as it pressed up and regularly took the ball off the hosts.

From there it was lethal.

It found space in behind the University defence which could not scramble to stop the counterattack.

Had it been able to stay onside more often early, the score would certainly have reached double-digits.

While University had more of the ball early, it was Coastal that had looked more dangerous.

That eventually told in the 12th minute as Jacob Richards ran on to a ball put in behind the defence and finished clinically.

Hogan made it 2-0 shortly afterwards as he fought off a trailing defender to catch up to the ball and finish past keeper Stewart Catto.

Jake Hodder headed in after Catto knocked one away high to make it 3-0 in the 26th minute.

At that point a big score began to look likely.

However, Coastal was unable to finish again before halftime.

It made up for that early in the second half.

Richards scored his second in the 53rd minute, before Hogan scored twice in three minutes.

Abdul Khalifa chipped in another two minutes later to give Coastal a 7-0 lead with half an hour remaining.

University pegged one back through Benjamin Stanley, but a Brett Clifford restored the seven-goal margin shortly afterwards and Hogan bagged a fourth.

Meanwhile Caversham put up a strong fight and was unlucky to be denied three points in Nelson.

It drew 1-1 with the table-topping Nelson Suburbs as goal-keeper Corey Wilson scored in the 95th minute to steal a draw.

Earlier Connor Neil had put one past Wilson to give Caversham the lead.

He curled a free kick from just out the box into the top left corner of the goal.

The team was reduced to 10 men when Sean Carter was given his second yellow card.

However, it looked to have done enough to hold on until Nelson's last minute goal.

The result leaves Nelson on top of the table on 13 points with two games to play.

Trailing by just one point is Coastal and Cashmere Technical - which managed a 4-1 win over Mosgiel in Christchurch.

Nomads United also put a hefty 5-0 scoreline on Western.
