Rose Morton is no stranger to pressure cooker moments.

The Dunedin City Royals captain has been in five Kate Sheppard Cup quarterfinals and led Southern United to the national final last year.

Never one to back down, Morton will again lead her troops into a sixth Cup quarterfinal tomorrow when the Royals host Cashmere Technical at Tahuna Park.

Cup games always bring a special kind of buzz that is never lost on Morton.

"It’s going to be a huge game" she said.

"Cup is always so much different to the league.

"It kind of doesn’t matter who you’re playing, where you’re playing — it’s just about football on the day and it can go any way, which I think is really exciting."

The Royals are fairly familiar with their Canterbury opponents, having come up against them several times through the years.

There are also some friendly faces in the Cashmere squad, including Margi Dias, the longtime Royals and Southern United player who returned home to Canterbury this year.

Morton said it would be odd to come up against Dias — "we’ll have a bit of a giggle on the field" — but it added to the exciting match-up.

"She’s a great player" Morton said.

"It probably helps both sides that we know how each other plays ...

"They’re going to really bring it to us and they’ll be up for the game. We just kind of have to match that and bring as much as we can."

The Royals advanced to the quarterfinals after beating Thistle 11-0, Roslyn Wakari 2-0 and Otago University 3-0.

Cashmere thumped Selwyn United 5-0, Coastal Spirit 6-0 and Nelson Suburbs 7-0.

The Royals, who were knocked out of the cup in the quarterfinals last year, picked up several new players this season in Abby Rankin, Bee Park, Raegan Potter, Madi McLean and Lauren Paterson, most of whom had national league experience.

Their focus through the first few rounds had been on gelling and getting their flow on the field.

"I think we’re kind of reaching that point now, so I think we’ve come at the right time to start really clicking and getting the combinations."

In the Chatham Cup, Otago University play the Royals in round four at the Logan Park Turf tomorrow.

Rosyln-Wakari also play Nelson Suburbs at Logan Park today in the Women’s South Island League.
