Abandoned match after injury to be replayed

Last week's abandoned Southern Premier League match is to be replayed.

The decision follows an early and controversial end to the Good Friday match between Green Island and Caversham at Sunnyvale.

An 85th-minute collision left Green Island's Matt Milton with broken tibia and fibula bones.

The score had been 1-1 and Caversham was facing a penalty after play resumed.

However, play never resumed as after a 35-minute break the teams were given the option of abandoning the game.

Caversham took that option, later clarifying in a statement that it was in the interests of Milton, rather concern over the result.

It leaves both teams with a match in hand at the midway point of the premier league.

The date of the replay remains to be confirmed.

Both are more than a win out of reach of the coveted top three spots which qualify for the South Island league.

Mosgiel leads the way with a perfect 15 points from five matches and has conceded just three goals all season.

It is yet to play the next two placed teams though, Queenstown and University.

Queenstown was thrashed by Southland United, but has won its four other games to accumulate 12 points.

That leaves it the only one of last year's South Island league sides - Southland and Dunedin Technical were the others - in the top spots.

University has been a surprise package and picked up three wins and a draw to reach 10 points, although it lost its first game of the season on Good Friday, to Queenstown. Several teams remain in touch in the chasing pack, though.

Roslyn Wakari has seven points but has already played the three teams above it.

Caversham, on six points, has also played two of the top three.

Also on six points are last year's champion Dunedin Tech, Southland United and Wanaka FC.

Green Island is ninth on three points, while Northern remains without a point.

In Thursday's Chatham Cup matches Tyler Cox starred by scoring four goals to help West End to a 5-1 win over Mornington.

Geraldine beat Grants Braes 5-1, while Gore Wanderers scored twice just after halftime to beat Thistle 2-1.
