Several hundred people from the South Island Filipino community came together in Dunedin at the weekend for a sports tournament.
South Island Filipino Sports Tournament organising committee member Michelle Cabale said nearly 700 players and supporters attended the tournament at the Edgar Centre.
The host city changed every year and teams travelled to Dunedin from Balclutha, Christchurch, Invercargill, Nelson, Oamaru, Queenstown.
The sports played at the tournament were badminton, basketball, chess, table tennis and volleyball.
An award ceremony and ‘‘victory party'' last night concluded the two-day tournament.
Before the ceremony, Philippine Basketball Association "legends'' Bal David, Kenneth Duremdes and Marlou Aquino played an exhibition game.
The most popular sport in the Philippines was basketball.
"Filipinos love basketball,'' Michelle Cabale said.
Dunedin Saints fans waved blue and gold pom poms to support their hometown team.
The event started in 2007 and got bigger every year, she said.
