Bike riders of all ages took to the Mosgiel BMX Track for the first day of competitive racing in nearly two years.

The Taieri BMX Club held its first racing day yesterday after a year-long wait for the pump track to undergo a revamp.

Club president Kent Murray said the new track provided a better space for competition.

"It’s a semi-professional kind of track, so it’s a lot faster.

"Kids can improve a lot more on this track."

It was "exciting" for the season to get under way and there had been a buzz around the Taieri BMX community, Mr Murray said.

The club was gaining momentum after a year of no racing, and memberships were continuing to be signed.

"The old members are signing back up.

"We’ve got a few new members coming on board.

"There’s a lot of kids that are just kind of wanting to have a go."

He was eager to see how the club could evolve, and he hoped to grow it into something more like the Dunedin BMX Club.

The new pump track was opened last month by the Dunedin City Council.

The refurbishment of the track included re-using materials from the existing track, where possible, to shape the new mounds and corners.
