The northerners came south and claimed the silverware.

A healthy field of 50 riders contested the 40th anniversary of the Kelvin Hastie Memorial on Saturday.

Rakaia rider Kyle Gray got the top prize. He was the first rider across the line in a time of 2hrs 32mins 56sec.

The handicapped race was contested over three laps of a 36km course from Outram to Berwick.

Timaru 19-year-old James Wilson took the prize for the fastest ride. He completed the race in 2hrs 30min 8sec.

Fellow Timaru rider Amy Hollamby was the quickest woman with a time of 2hrs 55min.

Dunedin triathlete Glenn McSkimming was fastest in the 50-plus category, clocking 2hrs 50min 31sec.

Brian Lippers, of Alexandra, was fastest in the 60-plus category.

Competitors were treated to warm conditions, but a strong northeast wind and the climb up Berwick Hill made for challenging racing.

In recent years, the Kelvin Hastie has been raced from Millers Flat to Mosgiel. But with Beaumont Bridge under construction, a new circuit between Outram and Berwick was introduced.

The new course proved popular with competitors, Cycling Otago road race convener Grant Campbell said in an email.
