The 18-year-old Taieri College pupil returned from the South Island secondary school championships in Christchurch at the weekend with a title and bragging rights.
The New Zealand under-19 individual pursuit champion scorched his way around the 3.3km track at Ruapuna in 4min 15sec - a time good enough to claim first place and set a record in the process.
But, perhaps more importantly, he got one up on some of his New Zealand team-mates.
Christ's College rider Will Bowman finished 6sec back in second place, with Pieter Bulling claiming third, a fraction behind Bowman, and Andy van der Heyden in fifth place.
While Brad has been named in the New Zealand junior track team which will contest the junior track world championships in Italy next month, he has to earn a ride at the tournament, with six riders competing for four spots in the pursuit team.
So the victory was significant from that point of view.
"It is a good indication of where I'm at," Evans said.
"I beat four of my five team-mates."
The thought of going all the way to Italy only to sit on the sidelines helps keep him motivated.
He spends up to four hours each day putting in the miles on the bike and has been skipping school in the afternoon for the last three or four weeks to fit in the extra training.
And it is paying dividends.
He has shed a few kilograms without losing any power and is feeling on top of his game.
"I'm definitely physically stronger than I was in March at the track nationals. So my training has been working really well," he said.
"I'm lighter as well. I think it is something which has just happened with the increase in training."
Evans hopes to get a ride in the omnium as well.
It is a new event and is basically cycling's answer to the decathlon.
It is usually five or six events across four or five days and suits all-round riders like Evans.
The New Zealand team leaves in two weeks for the championships, which begin in Montichiari on August 11.
Evans has set his sights on a medal with the pursuit team and in the omnium, and hopes a good performance at the championships will open further doors.
Finances have been a struggle and he has done everything from hosting a monster garage sale to a planned marathon indoor training ride at the Meridian Mall on Friday.
