The Rebels and the Clippers created history last night.

The two girls teams competed in what is believed to have been the first game between two all-girls teams in Dunedin junior cricket.

The match was played at Walton Park in Fairfield despite the weather threatening to ruin the fixture.

Rebels coach and former Taieri Cricket Club committee member Donna Burns said girls cricket was blossoming with the club now fielding four girls teams, including two teams in the same section.

In the past, girls have had to play in boys teams but four years ago the club got a girls team up and running and it has proved popular.

"I think it is because we started off with the Sparkles and they enjoyed it, so the word spread," Burns said when asked why girls cricket was flourishing at the club.

"It is amazing how much their skills have improved and it is because they have so much support and encouragement.

"And they have just come back year after year. A few of these girls started in section five with me and now they are in section three.

"I always give the other clubs in Dunedin a hard time and I say to them ‘Where is your all-girls team?’"

Sounds like a good challenge.
