Otago's reimagined batting lineup piled on 316 runs in their first outing.

That is some imagination.

The Volts went into their opening list A game of the season against Northern Districts in Whangarei with two new openers and promoted the hard-hitting Llew Johnson up the order to No3.

Regular opener Luke Georgeson dropped down to the middle order and got stuck in as well.

Despite having the bulk of the top six cast in new roles, the Volts produced a stunning innings and posted a massive 175-run win.

New coach Ashley Noffke came up with the redesign in consultation with the players and was thrilled with the way the team took up the challenge.

"Obviously I’m pumped for the guys to actually play the style of cricket they want," he said.

"There was things that they needed to learn from last year and they've really started strong, so it's been great."

The plan to overhaul the batting order was hatched during the preseason after "chatting with the players and understanding what type of players they want to be".

"It is about giving them an opportunity to put their best foot forward for the batting position that suits them.

"I was really confident that we had something that could work. And I really love Llew, Dale [Phillips] and Thorn [Parkes] up the top."

Parkes missed out but Phillips posted a composed 89 and Johnson clobbered 39 from 38 balls, while Georgeson pummelled 40 off 23 to inject some real momentum into the innings.

New recruit Leo Carter was influential as well. He added 53 and combined with Phillips in a 119-run stand.

The bowling also needs a special mention. The Volts rolled Northern Districts for a paltry 141.

Seamer Matt Bacon and spinner Dean Foxcroft nabbed three wickets apiece. But Noffke said left-arm quick Andrew Hazeldine (two for 24) was the pick of the bowlers.

"What Haze did up front, bowling over 140[kmh], swinging the ball down the line with really calm aggression, is exactly the type of player he wants to be.

"He's made some great changes over the preseason. He has changed some things to his run-up and I think he's ready for a big summer ahead."

That run-up is a bit shorter but he will be steaming into today.

The Volts will play defending champions Canterbury at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

Canterbury have made an impressive start as well. They dismissed Wellington for 129 at the Basin Reserve and won by six wickets.

Former Otago bowler Angus McKenzie starred with five for 14.
