Auckland set the benchmark during the campaign but they were in a tricky spot before it hosed down at Eden Park yesterday.
Canterbury had reached 133 for two from 14.2 overs. Tom Latham was undefeated on 58 from 33 balls.
It looked like the Aces would be chasing an enormous total.
But the game never resumed and Auckland were crowned champions courtesy of being the top qualifiers.
Earlier, when there was still some sun shining, Canterbury lost opener Chad Bowes (17) inside the power play.
But the old firm of Latham and Henry Nicholls put together a partnership low on risk but one which added up quickly.
Latham swung away a delivery from Ryan Harrison for six to up the pressure in the ninth over. He also got down the pitch and thumped spinner Louis Delport for six the next over.
The Black Caps test opener has another gear and he shifted into it.
Meanwhile, test discard Nicholls was lifting the tempo as well. He swung away a nice pull shot of Sean Solia. Latham bought up 50 with another six, this time over backward square.
Auckland desperately needed a breakthrough and they got it. Nicholls (42) played a scoop shot and Delport had to turn and chase and took a nice catch looking over his shoulder.
The pair had put on 90 and the visitors were in a strong position to push on towards 180-190.
But rained forced the players from the field at 5.32pm and the game was abandoned shortly after 7pm.
