The 26-year-old right-armer has had a slow start to this season. He has been sidelined with a hamstring complaint for the past two first-class fixtures.
But last summer, he started strongly and was selected to play for New Zealand A against the touring West Indies side in Queenstown. He also got a game against Pakistan A.
In his opening domestic one-day game of the season, he took seven for 35 against Auckland — the third-best return in New Zealand one-day cricket and an Otago record.
One of the other highlights was nabbing a hat trick against Auckland in a first-class game.
He finished the Plunket Shield as the second leading wicket-taker with 29 wickets at 34.31.
Auckland’s Will O’Donnell and Wellington’s Finn Allen were the other promising players singled out by the publication.
Allen went gangbusters in the Super Smash. He was the competition’s leading scorer with 512 at a strike rate of 193.93 and an average of 56.88, while O’Donnell was leading scorer in the Ford Trophy with 537 runs.
Black Caps Kyle Jamieson and Kane Williamson were named players of the year.
Jamieson took 37 test wickets in the period under review, while Williamson amassed 754 runs in five tests at an average north of 100.
