New Zealand is hosting the Under-19 Cricket World Cup and the Sir John Davies Oval at the Queenstown Events Centre shapes as one of the likely venues for the event, which gets under way on January 12.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council will discuss the tournament at its Community and Services Committee meeting today. The public has been excluded from the meeting.
It seems reasonable to conclude the council is considering a proposal to host some of the games.
Otago Cricket Association chief executive Mike Coggan declined to confirmed whether the tournament would visit Otago.
''You can probably read between the lines that the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) are in a position to possibly consider fixtures down that way,'' Coggan said.
''But we are not in a position to give you any information. That has to come down from the Under-19 Cricket World Cup committee.''
The Sir John Davies Oval has undergone an extensive upgrade, and the council put in $640,000 to help bring the ground up to international standard.
The venue proved a popular destination for touring teams between 2003 and 2014. But, with concerns about the playing surface and the drainage, it was dropped from the international schedule.
But with the recent improvements, those concerns have been removed. QLDC parks and reserves planning manager Stephen Quin has previously told the Otago Daily Times there have been discussions about elite cricket returning to the resort.
Coggan ruled Dunedin's University Oval out as a potential venue but hoped Queenstown would play an instrumental role in hosting the Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
An announcement on where the games will be staged is expected later this month.
Meanwhile, the provincial A tournament will be axed this summer as a consequence of hosting the global event. If Queenstown does host some cup games, then there would be an opportunity for the Otago A side to play some warm-up games against the various international under-19 teams, Coggan said.
