Former Otago Volts coach Rob Walter is heading home.

Walter will step down from his role as Central Stags coach after the Ford Trophy to take up his new job as South Africa’s ODI and T20 coach.

It is a major step into the world of international cricket after limited previous experience with New Zealand A and as the Proteas’ strength and conditioning and fielding coach from 2009 to 2013.

Walter coached the Titans franchise in South Africa and was an assistant with two Indian Premier League teams, the Pune Warriors and the Delhi Daredevils, before moving to New Zealand in 2016.

He spent five years coaching the Otago Volts and was highly regarded for his player development and work in the high-performance environment.

Walter led the Volts to two finals before joining the Stags in April 2021.

"It is somewhat of a bittersweet time for me," Walter said.

‘‘I have loved my time with the Stags. The staff and players have been awesome to work with and have treated myself and my family amazingly well.

"However, on the other side is an opportunity to work on the international stage which in many ways is a dream come true for me."

Central will appoint an interim coach to guide the team through four Plunket Shield games to complete the season, before advertising for a new head coach.
