Dunedin's twist on the Indian Premier League is back for another boundary.
The Dunedin Super League (DSL) debuted three years ago, adding something a little different to the January cricket calendar and has since become a popular fixture for teams across the South Island.
Season three, to be played at the Kensington Oval tomorrow, will feature three Dunedin teams, four Christchurch teams and one Timaru side battling it out for the sought-after prize money.
Among the returning teams is defending champion United 11, of Christchurch, which will be chasing back-to-back titles and the winner's cheque of $2001. The runners-up will receive $1001.
Dunedin's SL Lions, which won the inaugural tournament, will also be in the hunt.
Cricket enthusiasts Firoz Siat, Binu Anthony, of Dunedin, and Gino Thomas, who recently moved to Palmerston North, created the tournament after wanting bring some of the flair from their home country's Indian Premier
League (IPL) to Dunedin.
"We love cricket and we're very passionate," Siat said.
"For the winning team it's good money.
"They can celebrate their holidays or it's kind of like a fundraising for their team as well."
DSL is a twenty20 knockout tournament, with 15-over contests in the playoffs officiated by Dunedin cricket umpires.
Dunedin city councillor Andrew Whiley will open the tournament and organisers hoped to have live-streaming and live-scoring set up.
In the future, Siat said they planned to start a player auction for the tournament, similar to the IPL auctions.
"We want to take it to the next level.
"Every year we want to make it better and better."
