Pakistan clinched a maiden ODI victory against the White Ferns in New Zealand with a thrilling super-over win at Hagley Oval in Christchurch last night.

It has been an historic tour for Pakistan. They beat the White Ferns 2-1 in the T20 series to clinch their first series win against New Zealand.

They also inflicted a first super-over loss on Sophie Devine.

The queen of the six-ball shootout had helped win all eight of the previous games she had played which came down to a super over.

But not this time.

The New Zealand captain clouted a six over midwicket to put the home side within reach of a win.

But she skied a catch next ball and the game was lost.

The White Ferns will be left to reflect on a bumbling effort in the final stages of the game.

Wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze let four byes through on the penultimate ball to create an opening for Pakistan to force a super over.

And a series of fumbles in the field during that super over allowed Pakistan to steal several more runs.

The White Ferns posted 251 for eight and Pakistan responded with 251 for nine.

There were early signs of drama.

The White Ferns and Suzie Bates both got under way with an edge to third man for four.

That was streaky and she got a top edge in the third over which did not go to hand.

The breakthrough came at the other end, though. Gaze was run out for nine.

Put that down to pressure. The visitors were on top with the ball and Bates, who has been in good form in the series, had an off day.

She was dropped on 13 and then offered another on 24. And this time it was taken.

Her replacement Melie Kerr looked assured. She played the percentages well, rotated the strike and put the pressure back on the bowlers without taking any real risks.

She swept well and Pakistan’s spinners suddenly had to think more about their line and length.

Kerr’s easy timing and ability to find the gap enabled her score to rise quite rapidly.

Legspinner Ghulam Fatima got collared but bounced back to bowl Devine for 29 from 32.

Devine was just starting to kick off as well.

With her power back in the shed, Pakistan had struck an important blow. But Maddy Green was able to play an instrumental role.

She brought pace and hustle between the wickets and she combined with Kerr to put on 70 for the fourth wicket.

Kerr brought up her ninth ODI half century — her fourth score of 50 or more in her last five ODI innings — but could not push on to post a fifth century.

She got bowled around her legs for 77 by Fatima.

Green pushed on to post her second consecutive half century. Her undefeated knock of 65 and a quick 19 from Jess Kerr saw the White Ferns slip past 250.

Pakistan’s openers did not last. But Bismah Maroof and Aliya Riaz built a partnership focused on limiting risk and preserving wickets for a late onslaught.

Riaz, in particular, shaped as a prized wicket for the White Ferns. She demonstrated just how explosive she can be during the T20 series.

The team 100 came up in the 24th over. The require run rate was climbing, but not steeply.

Pakistan had wrestled a measure control over the game.

Maroof brought her half century up off an over throw. The next milestone was the 100-run partnership which followed promptly.

But Jess Kerr grabbed a caught and bowled opportunity to remove Riaz for 44.

That briefly removed some tension. But Pakistan were still in command and captain Fatima Sana came out and batted with courage and confidence.

Maroof’s fine knock of 68 came to an end when she mistimed a lofted shot down the ground off Fran Jonas and skewed a catch to Hannah Rowe.

But the most telling blow was made by Devine. She nicked off Sana for 36 and that set up a tense finish. Super tense.
