The Otago Volts have been forced into changes before their next three twenty20 games.

Top-order batter Dale Phillips is on leave while he awaits the arrival of his first child.

Josh Finnie has also been ruled out. He was struck by a bouncer during a training session last week and failed a fitness test on Wednesday.

Fast bowler Michael Rae has also been declared unfit. He has been struggling with a hamstring complaint since October.

Otago has named a 13-strong squad for upcoming games, starting with a fixture against Canterbury at Hagley Oval on Boxing Day.

Albion and former Otago top-order batter Josh Tasman-Jones has been recalled and is expected to open alongside captain Hamish Rutherford.

He is replacing Phillips, while former New Zealand under-19 star and Taieri all-rounder Beckham Wheeler-Greenall has been named in the squad.

The pair get their opportunity in the absence of opener Mitchell Renwick, who will join Volts team-mate Jarrod McKay in a New Zealand XI side for a two-day game against the touring Bangladesh side beginning on December 28.

Otago A batter Jacob Cumming was also named in that squad.

Tasman-Jones’ recall comes after he blazed 108 from 58 balls during a club T20 game against North East Valley earlier this month.

The 31-year-old right-hander has expanded his game since he last played for the Volts nearly three years ago.

Wheeler-Greenall was a standout performer for New Zealand at the under-19 World Cup in South Africa last year.

The 19-year-old shone during the six-wicket semifinal loss to Bangladesh. He clubbed 75 not out from 83 balls and attracted some positive attention from the world’s media.

No-one could mend it quite like Beckham, one writer suggested.

He has been in fine touch for Taieri in the one-day competition. He is the competition’s leading scorer with 201 runs at an average of 40.20. He has also grabbed five wickets at 13.
