The news from the University Oval this morning is bleak with Ross Taylor definitely ruled out of the second test against South Africa beginning in Wellington on Thursday.

The favourite to step in for Taylor, Otago's Neil Broom was confirmed as his replacement at a press conference this afternoon.

Taylor retired hurt on eight on day two of the first test in Dunedin with a low grade tear in his calf. It is unclear whether he will be available for the third and final test in Hamilton.

Seamer Trent Boult is also in doubt for the second test. He will travel with the team to Wellington but is struggling with a hip or groin injury.

Meanwhile, day five of the opening test has been washed out with rain forecast for the next two days. The match was nicely poised with South Africa 224 for six with a lead of 191 runs.
