Twenty-year-old left-armer Thomas O’Connor made his debut for the Volts yesterday.
He will have to wait for his opportunity to bowl.
Otago was put into bat by Central Districts and were 305 for five at stumps on day one at Molyneux Park.
But when he does tear in from the top of his mark he will be following in the boot prints of his father Shayne O’Connor.
Shayne O’Connor played his final first-class game at the venue in March 2003.
He picked up nine wickets in the match and led Otago to a nine-wicket win.
The former Black Cap probably should never have retired based on that outing.
Shayne is a match referee these days and is officiating in the game, so was able to watch from the pavilion.
Otago made a decent start.
Openers Dale Phillips (39) and Jacob Cumming (62) put on 70 for the first wicket.
Cumming eclipsed his previous highest score of 59 in registering his third first-class half-century.
The 21-year-old spooned a catch to mid-off.
Leo Carter had nicked out six balls earlier for 28.
The Volts had slipped from 141 for one to 142 for three.
Dean Foxcroft got set but perished for 18.
The innings was suddenly teetering. Thorn Parkes and Llew Johnson were the last recognised batters and the tail was longer than usual.
There is no Max Chu or Luke Georgeson to beef up the middle order.
But Parkes and Johnson put on 70 to give the innings some more substance.
Johnson was run out for 41. It looked a tight call but the umpire was well positioned and took his time with the decision.
Johnson wasted a split second before responding to the call from Parkes and that proved his downfall.
Parkes pushed on to post a half-century and will resume this morning on 74, and Brad Kneebone is at the wicket with him on 23.
In the other games, Auckland are 265 for seven against Northern Districts at Eden Park Outer Oval, while Wellington are 308 for six against Canterbury in Rangiora.
