New Zealand got its first close-up view of Bazball on Wednesday and it was exhilarating.England smashed 465 from 417 balls in a warm-up game against the New Zealand XI.

Harry Brook struck five sixes off one over from Adithya Ashok in a brutal attack on the wrist spinner.

Someone joked on Twitter whether is was really Bazball if you blocked the opening delivery of
an over.

The Volts were left Rudderless 30 minutes or so before the scheduled start of yesterday’s Super Smash preliminary final in Dunedin.

Otago captain Hamish Rutherford — known as Ruds or Rudders — injured his back prior to the warm-up and had to pull out of the match.

His form at the top of the order had been patchy, but his leadership was absolutely crucial in the
Volts’ run.

The bowlers certainly could have used his advice at the top of the mark.

Northern Districts opening pair Katene Clarke and Tim Seifert ran amok in is absence, swatting 105 from 8.2 overs and that proved the difference in the end.

Anyone can lose — even the all-conquering Australian women’s team.

On the eve of the T20 World Cup they were stunned by the unfancied Irish in a warm-up game.

The three-wicket loss will not have done the White Ferns any favours.

The two teams are scheduled to meet on Sunday morning (NZ time) and Australia is wide awake now. Wide awake.

Veteran Albion scorer Helen Simpson brought up a quirky milestone recently.

Simpson, who is in her 53rd season of scoring, scored an under-19 game between Otago and Northern Districts in Lincoln last month.

The Northern Districts line-up featured Riley McCullum — son of Brendon McCullum.

Riley is the third generation of McCullums she has covered. Before Riley she was furious scribbling down all the boundaries Brendon and older brother Nathan McCullum clubbed.

And before them she diligently recorded Stu McCullum’s efforts — Brendon and Nathan’s dad and Riley’s granddad.

Bugger. Was hoping for a busy Saturday watching both Otago teams win Super Smash finals.

Instead both bowed out in the elimination finals in Dunedin yesterday.
