Heavy overnight rain had left the pitch too damp.
But it had already banked enough points to win the Dunedin premiership grade and earn a photo opportunity with the Bing Harris Shield.
North East Valley manager Sheldon Kindley felt depth had been the key to the team’s success this season.
"We’ve had a really successful season," he said.
"After losing our very first game against Albion, we then went on to win the next 13 games.
"Depth in our squad has been key. We’ve been fortunate to have had some of our Volts available at times in Travis Muller, Jarrod McKay and Llew Johnson.
"But we’ve also had really strong performances from Thorn Parkes, Hunter Kindley, Oli White, Kaleb McKay, Sam Blakely and Jeremy Smith."
Former Otago wicketkeeper-batter Derek de Border has returned to Dunedin with his family and has been helping out with some coaching at the club.
Hunter Kindley led the scoring for the Swans this season with 622 runs at 47.85, while Oli White nabbed 20 wickets at 14.2.
The Swans have one game remaining. They will play Taieri in the one-day final this Saturday.
Taieri 189 beat University-Grange 86
Taieri will play North East Valley in the one-day final this Saturday after beating University-Grange in a virtual semifinal.
Taieri posted 189 at Brooklands Park and that proved plenty.
Beckham Wheeler-Greenall (31), Cameron Elliott (31), Nick Kwant (30) and Tim Boyle (30) all made solid contributions on a day when the ball dominated the bat.
Shiv Achary took three for 40 and Shawn Hicks, Benedict Hardie and Lahiru Vimukthi grabbed two apiece for University-Grange.
But it was in vain as Regan Flaws produced a devastating bowling display to help dismiss Grange for a paltry 86.
He took five for 27. Flaws got the important wicket of captain Sebastian Lauderdale-Smith and tore through the middle order.
Toby Hart, the leading wicket-taker in Dunedin premier cricket this season with 38 wickets at an average of 12, removed the dangerous Jacob Cumming for 17 and also trapped Venkat Kotte lbw for a duck.
Taieri won by 103 runs.
Albion 187 lost to CDK 189/4
CDK completed a disappointing season with a six-wicket win over Albion at Tonga Park.
The Hounds won the Dunedin premier grade last season but fell all the way to last in the overall standings this season.
Jack Wright (three for 30) and Vinay Chandrappa (three for 42) teamed up to help bowl out Albion for 187.
Taylor Cumberland top-scored with 70 and Matthew West added a valuable 36 from 35 balls from No 9.
The Hounds eased to victory in the 35th over. Opener Xavier Chisholm clobbered 91 from 70 balls, while Jack Pryde (45) and Jonty Fleck (36 not out) helped seal the win.
Tommy Clout grabbed two for 33 and James Brown bowled nicely for one for 22.
