Earlier this year Jagannathan was named community match official of the year at the NZC awards and was thrilled with his promotion.
"The opportunity has been given to me and it is very satisfying,’’ he said.‘‘It is up to me now to prepare so that I’m ready when the opportunity actually comes."
Jagannathan joins Otago’s Peter Pasco on the reserve panel.
Otago’s premier umpire, Chris Gaffaney, retains his position on the ICC elite umpires panel for 2017-2018, while Shaun Haig keeps his spot on the NZC international panel and Derek Walker will continue on the national panel.
All three umpires have played first-class cricket for Otago and are highly regarded officials.
Canterbury’s John Bromley has been promoted to the national panel. He has been a member of the reserve panel since 2010-11, having stood in five first-class games, three twenty20 fixtures and four one-dayers.
He replaces long-serving Auckland umpire Phil Jones.
A feature of NZC’s umpiring landscape has been the decision to reduce the reserve panel from 19 to 12 umpires. The decision was made to provide a clearer pathway for those developing umpires capable of promotion.
