Hamstring injury rules out pace bowler Rae from Plunket Shield match

Otago pace bowler Michael Rae has been ruled out for tomorrow’s Plunket Shield match against Central Districts in Dunedin.

The lanky right-armer picked up a hamstring strain in the opening round loss to Wellington at the Basin Reserve and is expected to be sidelined for seven to 10 days.

Matt Bacon comes into the side as a replacement, while batter Josh Finnie was included in the Volts squad last week as Covid-19 and concussion cover but is not required.

Bacon played for Otago A last week and picked up one wicket in the first innings.

He will compete with Angus McKenzie for a spot in the XI.

For the most part Otago bowled well at the Basin . Travis Muller took a career-best six for 52 in Wellington’s first innings.

Jacob Duffy bowled some tidy spells and Jake Gibson nabbed a couple of key wickets in his first-class debut.

It was the batting which let Otago down.

The captain Hamish Rutherford produced a fine knock of 77 in the second innings. But it was the only stint at the crease of any substance for the Volts.

Otago coach Dion Ebrahim felt his side was 50 or so runs short in each innings.

‘‘My only point around the batting and where we were found wanting is simply not doing the basics well enough for long periods,’’ Ebrahim said.

Players were lured into shots when they perhaps should have looked to leave or get into positions to play better shots.

There was no thought given to tinkering with the order or bringing in anyone new. One game is a small sample size but Ebrahim will be looking to see improvements against the Stags.

The Central Districts side was not available yesterday but Ebrahim was not expecting too many changes to the XI which drew with Canterbury at Hagley Oval.

‘‘Potentially Will Young might come in and they might rotate one of their bowlers.’’

Bayley Wiggins scored a century on first-class debut against a strong Canterbury line-up including international Matt Henry, and Blair Tickner claimed his fourth first-class five-wicket bag. Veteran opener Greg Hay passed 6000 first-class runs and posted his 14th first-class hundred in the game.
