Delta to care for all pitches, share ground maintenance

Delta is to continue its role maintaining Dunedin's cricket pitches while City Care will not have anything to do with the wickets.

Delta took over the contracts for both the city's northern and southern pitches halfway through last summer.

The firm was called in by the Dunedin City Council to fix problems caused by sub-standard preparation by previous contractor City Care.

That had led to pitches at four grounds being closed in December. All but one was reopened by mid-January.

City Care was suspended from its contract for four months, but continued to look after the grounds.

That arrangement will continue this season. City Care will look after the grounds under the south contract while Delta will look after all pitches throughout the city, and the grounds in the northern part of the city.

Dunedin City Council parks and cemetery manager Gareth Jones said the proven record and expertise of Delta was the reason for the decision.

``We made the call to go with the current set-up at the halfway point last season.

``At that time we had a number of meetings with Dunedin Cricket to discuss our approach and it was jointly agreed as the best way forward.''

Less than two weeks out from the beginning of the cricket season, Jones said the city's grass pitches were looking good.

They had been renovated and were in ``ideal condition''.

In order to avoid a result similar to last season, he said the council would keep an eye on the condition of the pitches week-to-week.

``Although we are very confident with the contract staff in place, we will have our experienced staff keeping tabs on pitch quality.

``We receive weekly pitch reports from umpires and players and DCC staff will also be randomly inspecting wicket maintenance.''
