Day-by-day for Kindley

Hunter Kindley is hoping an untimely injury will not ruin his prospects of making the New Zealand under-19 World Cup team.

The promising Otago age-group cricketer was all set to play for Otago Boys' High School at next week's Secondary School Boys' First XI Cup but dislocated his shoulder while training with the Volts last week.

He will miss the tournament but hopes to be fit in time for the final two matches of the National Under-19 tournament which starts in Lincoln on Monday.

''I was lucky enough to be included in the Volts training for the first time but in one of the first drills I popped it out diving forward,'' the 18-year-old said.

''I was pretty gutted but there is still a slim chance I might be able to catch a few games at the end of the under-19s.

''I'm just taking it day-by-day and just seeing how it goes.''

It is terrible timing. The national under-19 World Cup team is expected to be named in mid-December. Kindley is part of the training squad but will not get much opportunity, if at all, to shine before the side is selected.

He was the leading scorer at the under-19 tournament last season and was selected for the New Zealand under-18 team. But he fractured his ankle during the last over of Otago's dramatic five-run win against Auckland in the final and was not able to play in the New Zealand team.

''It is definitely a bit taxing but I guess you can't really do much about it can you.''
