Cricket: Wells guides University-Grange to win

University-Grange 193 beat Taieri (114) by 79 runs

Otago all-rounder Sam Wells starred with the bat to help University-Grange overcome Taieri at Memorial Park at Mosgiel on Saturday.

The talented left-hander kept calm, despite wickets tumbling around him, and scored 50 from 64 deliveries to guide his side to 193.

Jason Hynes scored a valuable and undefeated 20 from 23 deliveries and bowled a tidy spell to help his side defend the target, taking two for 16 from seven overs.

Anthony Harris got Taieri off to a brisk start with 24 from 28 and Ryan Senior did his best to hold the innings together with an undefeated 30.

The rest of the batting fell away alarmingly as David Goddard ran through the lower order with four for 29 to help dismiss Taieri for a paltry 114.

Carisbrook-Dunedin 194/9 lost to Kaikorai (197/5) by five wickets

Opener Ryan Duffy stroked a marvellous century to help Kaikorai beat Carisbrook-Dunedin by five wickets.

Duffy's 121 provided the backbone for the chase, with Geordie Scott chipping in with 48 to help seal the win.

Earlier, Sean Eathorne scored 46, James Hogg (34) and Rhys Phillips (31) helped Carisbrook-Dunedin reach 194 for nine from 50 overs. Phillips also had a good day with the ball, taking two for 32 from a 10-over spell which included three maidens.

Craig Sneddon was the pick of the Kaikorai bowlers with two for 15 from six overs.

Albion 134 lost to North East Valley (135/5) by five wickets

North East Valley cruised to a five-wicket win with Otago pair Neil Broom (57) and Derek de Boorder (36) scoring the bulk of the required runs.

Broom helped set up the win with an impressive seven-over spell in which he took three for 20.

Younger brother Darren Broom finished off the tail, picking up two for four from 1.5 overs to dismiss Albion for just 134.

Nick Beard was the only Albion batsman to offer much resistance with an innings of 32. Shaun Haig was the next-leading scorer with 17 runs. Blair Brown picked up two wickets for Albion, including the prized scalp of Neil Broom.

Otago Country 146 beat Green Island (140) by six runs

Brendan Domigan missed out with the bat but took three crucial wickets to help Otago Country beat Green Island by six runs in a low-scoring but dramatic match at Molyneux Park in Alexandra.

The classy all-rounder helped Country defend a trifling total of 146 with an inspired bowling spell, nicking out the dangerous Craig Cumming (26) and bowling experienced campaigner Mark Joyce.

And when Dion Lobb (31) threatened to snatch the game away late in the innings, Domigan enticed the batsman into a mistake.

Sean Windle did the rest, trapping the No 10 and No 11 batsmen leg before wicket.

Domigan finished with three for 27 from 10 overs. Eric Stanfield also played a crucial role. He top-scored with 25 from 29 deliveries and picked up three for 13 from eight overs.

Green Island's Russell Ritchie took five for 30 from 10 overs in an impressive but ultimately unsuccessful effort.
