Experienced middle-order batsman Greg Todd has missed selection for Otago's opening one-day match against Wellington at the Queenstown Events Centre tomorrow.
Todd has played 49 one-day matches for Otago and scored 1130 runs at an average of 28.25 but has been overlooked, with the likes of Darren Broom and Sean Eathorne getting the nod in the middle order instead.
"We can't fit everybody in and we just feel the other guys at the moment are in better form," Otago coach Mike Hesson said.
"Sean Eathorne is very proactive against spin and rotates the strike nicely and is good in the field.
He also offers a bowling option, as does Darren Broom."
If Broom gets on the field it will be his debut for Otago, while Anthony Bullick and Nick Beard will be making their one-day debuts for the province.
The selectors have named a 13-strong squad which also features exciting left-hand opening batsman Hamish Rutherford.
Rutherford seized his opportunities in the twenty/20 tournament last season with some fearless batting.
Ian Butler has been included but he suffered a side strain in the nine-wicket win over Wellington in yesterday's Plunket Shield match, also at the Queenstown Events Centre.
Hesson said Butler had made a quick recovery but if there was any doubt he would be rested.
All-rounder Nathan McCullum and top-order batsman Aaron Redmond were unavailable because of injury.
Otago made the final of the one-day tournament last season, losing to Northern Districts in the final in Hamilton.
