Styris, 35, said that following this year's World Cup held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, he had time to reflect on his international future and decided the time was right to step aside as the team begins a new era (under coach John Wright and new captain Ross Taylor).
"I have thoroughly enjoyed representing my country in the international cricketing environment.
"It has been an honour and a pleasure to play for the Black Caps alongside so many quality players over the years and to have been a part of many key moments during that time."
Styris will continue to play domestic cricket for Northern Districts and in the Indian Premier League with the Chennai Super Kings.
He played his first match for the Black Caps on the 1999 tour of India and his last was in this year's World Cup semifinal against Sri Lanka.
In all Styris played 29 tests from which he compiled 1586 runs, including five centuries, and a highest score of 170 to finish with an average of 6.04.
With the ball, he claimed 20 wickets at an average of 50.57 with a career best haul of three for 28.
In 188 one-day internationals, Styris scored 4483 runs, including four centuries, at an average of 32.48 and 137 wickets at an average of 35.32.
He has scored 578 runs from 31 international Twenty20 matches at an average of 21.40 while grabbing a total of 18 wickets at an average of 19.38.
Styris is currently playing cricket for Essex in the English Couty Twenty20 competition.
