Cricket: Sky dodges conflict issue

Sky played a dead bat when asked if there was any conflict of interest between Ian Smith's role as a commentator and his part in an orchestrated campaign to undermine the governance of New Zealand Cricket.

The former New Zealand cricketer turned broadcaster is more of an all-rounder than we previously thought.

While he has been busy promoting cricket in his role as a broadcaster, he has also been agitating in the background with the group led by fellow former New Zealand cricketer John Parker to bring about change at a governance level.

In December, commentator John Morrison, who is also involved in the Parker group, complained Sky had asked broadcasters not to keep raking over the Black Caps' off-field dramas or rehash the controversy surrounding the axing of Ross Taylor as captain.

He argued commentators should be free to scrutinise the game. Sky spokeswoman Kirsty Way responded by telling the Herald on Sunday: ''We don't put down sporting codes because we're in the business of promoting sport.

''It's natural for our commentators to promote our product.''

However, when asked yesterday if the company felt Smith's actions outside of work were in conflict with Sky's agenda, Way responded: ''Look, I can't comment on that, I'm afraid.

''If there was an issue, it would be an employment matter ... and I can't discuss any employment contracts for any staff members. But it is Sky's philosophy that we promote sport.''
