Cricket: Rain brings first points for Otago

Otago gained its first points of the one-day domestic competition yesterday and it did not have to lift a finger.

The match between the Otago Volts and the Central Districts Stags was abandoned in New Plymouth without a ball being bowled.

The weather was not great in New Plymouth with patchy drizzle throughout and the chance of play never looked promising.

It was also overcast and the coolish conditions made it difficult for the ground to dry out.

Otago coach Nathan King said there was some thought of playing a game shortened to something like 20 overs each early in the afternoon.

But the drizzle continued to hang around, the light did not get any brighter and there were concerns if a shortened game was started it would be too dark to get finished.

Eventually, about 2.30pm, it was decided to pull the pin and the sides gained two points each.

It was Otago's first points of the competition after it lost its first two games against Auckland and Canterbury in Alexandra before the new year.

King said it was good to get on the board but with other teams getting points, it was not a huge gain.

The side will travel to Christchurch today to prepare to take on Canterbury in Christchurch on Wednesday at Hagley Oval.

The match yesterday at Hagley Oval was also washed out and Wellington batted only into the sixth over after a late start.

Though the one-day competition may seem to only be in its early stages, the match on Wednesday against Canterbury will be the halfway mark in the competition, so Otago needs to find winning form if it wants to make the finals of the competition.

Canterbury is top of the table at the moment and should go into the match on Wednesday with plenty of confidence.

The weather forecast for Wednesday in Christchurch is more promising, with fine weather predicted.

Otago will train in Christchurch tomorrow and the fly home to Dunedin on Thursday for a couple of days at home, before heading to Whangarei to take on Northern Districts next Sunday.

In the other game yesterday, Northern Districts beat Auckland by 101 runs at Eden Park Outer Oval.
