McCullum may be a late inclusion into the side if he is released by the Black Caps after their game against Pakistan today.
McCullum did not bat or bowl in the first one-dayer in Wellington and was 12th man in the second abandoned game in Queenstown.
Depending on what happens in Christchurch today, the all-rounder may be winging his way to Auckland tomorrow morning.
Otago coach Mike Hesson said the inclusion of McCullum would be a real bonus with the pitch at Colin Maiden Park expected to take some turn.
Otago sits second on the table, one point behind Canterbury, and appears to have done enough to qualify for the top four.
But Hesson said the side desperately wanted to make the top two, as it would then have a life in the semifinals.
It plays Canterbury in Timaru on Wednesday in its final game before the semifinals.
Hesson said the side was playing good cricket and had done well to manage a tie with Northern Districts on Thursday in Whangarei, after the home side appeared to have the game for the taking.
Auckland sits just behind Otago and lost ground on Thursday when its match against Central Districts was rained out in New Plymouth.
All the players had pulled up well after the match with Northern, Hesson said, and he wanted the good cricket played by his side in the one-day competition to continue.
Otago squeaked home by two wickets over Auckland in Oamaru last Sunday.
The remnants of Cyclone Wilma were expected to lash Auckland today but the weather was expected to clear for the match tomorrow.
Kyle Mills is out of the Auckland side in order to play for the Black Caps and he is replaced by Michael Bates.
