The Volts' four-day squad travels to Wellington tomorrow for the start of its four-day match against the Firebirds on Thursday with coach Nathan King expecting to make a "tweak'' or two to the squad as he sifts through the players best suited to the first-class format.
Aside from an injury to twenty20 captain Nathan McCullum, King can choose from a full complement of players as the team settles back into the longer form.
"We've been really fortunate - we've been able to play the same team for quite some time now, which is good.''
McCullum landed heavily on his left knee as he dived for a catch on Sunday night.
"He's had a similar injury in the past,'' King said.
"It's not something new but in terms of how long that will take to come right, time will tell.''
King said the Volts were outplayed by the Auckland Aces in the Super Smash final, although he thought his side was in with a show when set 167 to win.
"It was probably 10 or 20 more than what we would have ideally liked to chase, but it was chaseable,'' he said.
Anaru Kitchen (29) and Hamish Rutherford (20) got Otago off to a positive start, until Mitchell McClenaghan struck with a triple-wicket maiden in the seventh over.‘The start was outstanding and that over really killed us,'' King said.
We never really recovered from it. James Neesham got a start and Nathan McCullum did a good job, but we were really behind the 8-ball after that.
The Volts finished as top qualifier in the six-team competition - something the side can be proud of, King said.
"Overall we played some really good cricket, but unfortunately last night we weren't the better team and that's as simple as it is,'' he said.
"It's a tough pill to swallow but we look back on a campaign that was really successful but we're just disappointed with the way it finished.''
