Canterbury all-rounder Rob Nicol has been named New Zealand domestic cricket's most valuable player of the season.

Stellar all-round performances in the limited-overs formats propelled him to top spot MVP standings - he won the one-day competition's MVP award and was fourth in the Twenty20 standings -- and he held on to the overall lead during the Plunket Shield.

Nicol was the leading one-day runscorer, with 648 at 72, as well as contributing 15 wickets with his off-spin at an impressive runs-per-over rate of 4.22. He also led all scorers in the Twenty20 league with 285 runs at 31.66.

While the Plunket Shield was not as productive - he scored 449 runs at 32.07 - Nicol was able to hold on to the overall lead rounded off despite a late charge from Otago fast bowler Neil Wagner, who claimed top honours in the four-day competition after capturing 51 wickets at 18.15 and finished second overall.
