It is in India, for six weeks work, and pays $US100,000 ($NZ131,500).
The 30-year-old will join the razzle-dazzle of the Indian Premier League after Pune bought his services in a player auction yesterday morning New Zealand time.
The all-rounder stayed up until 1am to watch the auction unfold and the lost sleep was worth it. He had a reserve of $US100,000 and hovered over his laptop in his motel Alexandra, waiting to see if he would attract bids. Pune meet the reserve, leaving McCullum ecstatic.
"It was a little bit of a surprise but I'm pretty happy about it," he said.
"It is going to be a good challenge and I'm looking forward to playing with some other international players and in the IPL."
While McCullum, who understands it is a three-year deal, was pleased with his lot, Black Caps team-mate Ross Taylor must have been beside himself when the hammer fell.
He became an instant millionaire with Rajasthan Royals forking out $NZ1.3 million to secure his services.
He was not the only Black Cap in the money, with New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori selling to Bangalore for $723,000 and Brendon McCullum to Kochi for $625,000.
James Franklin went for $131,500 and Scott Styris for $263,000.
McCullum's new team-mates will include South African captain Graeme Smith and the Indian internationals Robin Uthappa and Yuvrag Singh, who fetched almost $4 million between them.
McCullum was not certain exactly how much he would end up with.
"All I know is I got bought in the auction and I haven't heard anything else. I guess things will unfold in the next few weeks."
Otago team-mates Ian Butler and Aaron Redmond were up for auction overnight.
