Cricket: Low scoring in rain-affected twenty/20

The Saddle Hill Steamers won the twenty/20 franchise club final at University Oval on Saturday but it was a close-run thing.

Played on a University Oval track which was sporting to the bowlers, the Saddle Hill Steamers batted first and scored just 106, the innings closing on the first ball of the last over.

Rain curtailed much of the day with the semifinals in the morning cancelled because of the weather.

The play-off for third and fourth was also abandoned after some water got in under the covers, leaving just the one match to be played in trying conditions.

No-one really got going for the Steamers and the innings was held together by Ant Harris, with an unbeaten 48.

The wickets were shared around, with Matt Lobb and Rhys Phillips picking up a couple each.

In reply, Eastern Beaches never got going and fell two runs short, scoring 104 for seven wickets.

The side needed eight off the last over, bowled by Dion Lobb, but could not manage the equation.

Tony McEntyre and Dan Willemsen were at the wicket.

Willemsen hit the last ball to third man and was caught near the boundary.

Lobb picked up the three wickets and bowled well in the final over, while captain Jordan Sheed took a couple of wickets.

Club cricket returns next week.

The match will be shown on Channel 9 on Thursday night.
