Otago assistant coach Mohit Rao will travel to Hong Kong on Sunday - a temporary move he says is the next step in his coaching career.

Rao, who has been the Volts assistant coach for the past two seasons, will return to New Zealand at the end of September to resume his role with Otago but is excited by the opportunity to do some coaching in Hong Kong.

"I'll be working for Hong Kong Cricket Club and basically working with different age-groups from kids to seniors," Rao said.

The 38-year-old said Otago Sparks coach Nathan King, who has done some coaching in Hong Kong, suggested the move to Rao.

"I'm looking at it as an experience. Moving to a new country is a test of every coach no matter what level it is at."

Rao moved to New Zealand from India 10 years ago and worked with Basketball Otago as the operations manager for five years before accepting a role as a cricket development officer with Otago Cricket four years ago.

He is ambitious to coach at first-class level but expects to serve a lengthy apprenticeship.

"At some stage I'll look to move up the ladder but I'm happy where I am, helping out as the assistant coach and working under Vaughn Johnson.

"I do have ambition but I'm not rushing towards it. I think I will know when I'm ready for it and I haven't put a time frame on it."
