Cricket: Hesson may head to capital

Otago coach Mike Hesson has not ruled out a surprise shift to Wellington next season.

Hesson, who is in his sixth season coaching Otago, signalled his intention to step down at the end of the summer in April last year.

With Wellington coach Anthony Stuart asked to move on at the end of the season, there is a vacancy in the capital and Hesson confirmed he would consider applying for the job.

"What I've said is, at the end of the year, I will look at all options, which includes overseas opportunities," Hesson said.

"And at that time, Kate [Hesson's wife] and I will discuss what is best for the family. I haven't applied for the Wellington job and won't be looking to do so at this stage."

Hesson has a desire to land a coaching role in the English county scene and said "it is certainly one of the options".

While there will be some sadness leaving the province, Hesson said he made the decision with the best interests of Otago cricket at heart.

"I still really enjoy the job and am really looking forward to the next couple of months," Hesson said.

"But I think after six years the players need a new voice. I've been coaching some of the players since they were very young and I think, regardless of how competent you are as a coach, players need new voices."

Under Hesson's leadership, Otago ended a 20-year drought when it won the one-day tournament in 2007-08. The Volts backed up the following season, winning the twenty/20 title, and made the semifinals of the one-day competition this season.

Otago Cricket Association chief executive Ross Dykes said until Hesson made a formal resignation, the association will not be actively looking for a replacement.

However, Dykes said the association was well aware Hesson was determined to move on.

With Wellington also in the market for a coach, there will be some stiff competition to attract a quality candidate.

Volts assistant coach Mohit Rao, Otago Country coach Andy Sainsbury and former Otago and Wellington coach Vaughn Johnson shape as the leading local contenders, while former Black Caps Dipak Patel and Shane Bond have expressed interest in finding coaching jobs.
