Pace bowler Mat Harvie shone with the ball as Otago opened its summer of cricket with a trial game against Canterbury in Lincoln yesterday.
Harvie claimed four for 44 with his accurate seamers as Otago dismissed Canterbury for 281 on the first day of a two-day game.
Otago coach Mike Hesson said Harvie bowled with good pace on a flat pitch.
Ian Butler was Otago's most successful other bowler, taking two wickets for 46, while young spin bowler Nic Beard claimed his first wicket for Otago.
Canterbury batted the whole day - 100 overs - but its score was taken from when its 10th wicket fell.
Otago will bat all day today, while a second two-day game will be played tomorrow and Thursday.
